What if old postcards could come to life?
In the “Living Postcards” project, young participants reached back into the visual history of Zabrze, working with archival postcards that once captured the city’s everyday life. Using AI technology, they transformed these still images into dynamic, immersive scenes.
The results go far beyond simple animation. Trams begin to move along historic streets, people walk through long-gone squares, and birds cross the sky - as if the past had been set gently in motion. Even more, these scenes are not only visible, but also audible, adding another layer to the experience.
To deepen this journey, the Zabrze-based band Meinusch Project contributed their music, creating a unique soundscape that accompanies the revived images. Together, image and sound invite viewers into a metaphorical journey through the city’s past - one that connects history with contemporary technology and youthful creativity.
Just a few days before Christmas, on 19 December 2025, our young guides invited residents and visitors on a unique journey through Zabrze. Under the supervision of professional tour guide Dariusz Walerjański, they led a special city tour unlike any other.
This time, the journey took place aboard a historic tram, made possible thanks to the support and cooperation of Silesian Trams (Tramwaje Śląskie S.A.). As the tram moved through the winter streets of the city, participants had a chance to experience Zabrze from a completely new perspective - combining local history with a festive atmosphere.
The event attracted great interest, and all seats on board were quickly filled. Both participants and representatives of Silesian Trams expressed strong enthusiasm for organizing similar events in the future...
The project was carried out under the honorary patronage of the Silesian Voivode and the President of the City of Zabrze, and attracted strong interest from local communities, cultural institutions, and media - reaching thousands of people both directly and online.
Their work left a visible mark on the city. Across Zabrze, 15 educational boards with QR codes now invite passers-by to discover stories hidden in everyday places. At the same time, the project lives on online through SpacerownikZabrze.pl (Zabrze Walking Guide) - a multilingual platform that opens the city to a wider, international audience.
But perhaps the most important outcome cannot be measured in numbers. The project led to the creation of the Youth Academy of Local Heritage - a space where curiosity turns into competence, and where young people continue to engage with their local community long after the project’s official end.
This initiative was made possible thanks to the collaboration of numerous partners:
What does a city look like when it is discovered by young people? In Zabrze, the answer became the “Youth Guides – Local Heritage and Traditions in Zabrze” project.
Implemented under a grant from the Polish Ministry of Education, the initiative brought together 24 students and a group of teachers, inviting them to explore the city not just as learners, but as storytellers, researchers, and future guides.
Through a series of workshops, expert-led sessions, and hands-on fieldwork, participants immersed themselves in the history, culture, and identity of Zabrze. Step by step, they transformed knowledge into experience - designing six original themed walking routes and leading real guided tours for residents and visitors.
